Mom and I just watched this. I’m never a big fan of oversexualized and exotified girls but there’s a conflict that’s creating a bit of an exception…
Things I liked…
Zoe Saldana’s character is mixed race (err, she identifies as Columbian [thus making it her nationality] but she’s clearly from biracial parents)
WOMAN OF COLOR AS THE LEAD ROLE
using her Spanish… but there should have been more. I like her PR/DR accent.
she didn’t use her femininity to kill a target (explanation: she didn’t have to pose as a prostitute or be a dingbat at a high class bar)
her character carefully planned every part of every hit. Genius!
the part with her Tio about being smart in order to be a killer (sorry for that lowkey spoiler)
complex character with complex emotions and complex ways of coping with them
metaphors. everyyyyywhere.
Zoe Saldana speaking Spanish. I know it’s here twice, but rarely do we see deeper toned Latin@s identifying with their ethnicity on the big screen. It’s a big deal.
lesson learned: if every girl aspires to be Xena, Warrior Princess (instead of Barbie) then there will be more HBICs
Things I didn’t like…
I’m not Zoe Saldana. :(
